Signs Your Roof Has Suffered Water Damage

Do you suspect that your roof has suffered severe water damage? There are certain unmistakable signs that water damage has happened, and it needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible. If you fail to take action to repair your roof when there is water damage, things can get complicated very fast. Here's how to spot the signs of water damage.

Interior Signs

There are often interior signs that your roof is leaking. Discolorations on your ceiling are one of those signs. Your ceiling may start to have a brown, cream, gray, or even black color.

No matter what color you see, discoloration is a sign that water is doing some damage. If you have recently had a storm in your area, this may be the culprit. At other times, water has simply been accumulating over time, and this is what is causing the damage.

Missing or Damaged Shingles

Missing or damaged shingles are also another sign that water damage is taking place. Shingles are made in such a way that water flows down them into your gutters, and then the water runs through the gutters and into the ground.

When your roofing shingles start going missing or become damaged, it could be a sign that there is water damage. Check your gutters as well; if they are blocked, this could be what is causing water damage.

Sagging and Bulging

If there are sagging or bulging areas on your roof, this is also an indicator that something may be going wrong with your roof. Once areas of your roof start sagging, this is often visible and is an indicator that water damage may have caused structural problems.

Sometimes areas do not sag; they may simply start bulging. Bulging areas are also an indicator that there may be water damage on your roof.

Soft and Spongy Sections

Doing a roof inspection is something that should always be a priority for you. This is one of the best ways to know if there is something wrong with your roof. If you can walk across your roof, you may notice that certain areas feel softer and spongier than other areas. Be very careful in these areas, as it is a sign that water damage has taken place.

The sections that are soft and spongy are often the areas that will start sagging if you do not take action to get your roof fixed. Call in a roofing contractor if you need help repairing your roof.
